DEFENSIVE USE OF FIREARMS
A Common-Sense Guide to Awareness, Mental Preparedness, Tactics, Skills, and Equipment
By Stephen P Wenger

Defensive Use of Firearms addresses the reality and practicality of using a firearm for self-defense. One aspect of that reality is that the software – mental awareness, mental preparedness, tactics and skill – takes higher precedence than the hardware. The author does discuss hardware, but in terms of practicality on the street or in the home, not on the shooting range.

Intended for the gun owner who has realized that mere ownership of a firearm does not convey protection, this book will be of particular interest to those who are engaged in or are contemplating legal concealed carry of a handgun. While primarily oriented toward the handgun, it does contain material about the defensive use of long guns, further expanding its relevance to home defense. A glossary is included for the reader who may be new to the world of firearms. The chapters on tactics and skills include line drawings that aid the reader's grasp of the concepts described.

This concise and affordable handbook offers the reader a set of common-sense principles, tactics and techniques distilled from hundreds of hours of the author's training, which includes certification as a law-enforcement handgun, shotgun, patrol rifle and tactical shooting instructor.

REVIEWS

Defensive Use of Firearms serves more than one purpose.  It’s a primer for those new to the world of defensive firearms, a purpose it serves admirably.  Stephen Wenger condenses his considerable training and education into easily understood and concise blocks.  It should be a primary text for CCW instruction.

It’s also a refresher for the Old Salts.  From his unique description of the basics of gunhandling (including the use of Clive Shepherd’s wonderfully useful Safety Circle) to his understanding of the law, he gives the instructors among us another way to explain “what we know.”

Defensive Use of Firearms will share my reference library with Spaulding’s Handgun Combatives, Cooper’s Principles of Personal Defense, and Ayoob’s In The Gravest Extreme as an “essential.”

Sgt. Richard Grassi (retired), Contributing Editor, Guns and Weapons for Law Enforcement

This comprehensive book should be mandatory reading for anyone considering using a firearm for personal protection and anyone who is currently doing so.  There's no other book quite like Defensive Use of Firearms and the subtitle of A Common-Sense Guide… adds focus to one area that is all too lacking when it come to firearms use:  common sense.

Whether you are a grizzled big city cop or a soccer mom who is contemplating purchasing a firearm for self-defense, you'll want to own Defensive Use of Firearms.  This book won't give you the physical skills you need, but it will provide you with a comprehensive blueprint of what you need to know if you own a firearm for self-defense.

Look at it this way: purchase a firearm, ammo and holster - $600; take self-defense shooting lessons - $400; read Defensive Use of Firearms - priceless!

Ed Nowicki, Executive Director, International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association; nationally recognized use of force expert

Stephen Wenger has one of the most analytical minds in the instructional business, and this book reflects that approach.  It is full of insights, facts and approaches that will benefit beginners and old timers alike.  A valuable addition to the literature.

Ralph Mroz, author of Defensive Shooting for Real-Life Encounters

Defensive Use of Firearms is a well thought out text for both the novice and the experienced firearms user.  From civilian to law enforcement to the military, each reader can glean a greater understanding of what it means to use a firearm in a defensive manner.

Sgt. Brian Stover, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department

Defensive Use of Firearms contains some new and thought-provoking tactics and will be a welcome addition to anyone's library.

Sgt. Dean Caputo, Firearms Training Unit, Arcadia Police Department

My good friend Steve Wenger knows what he is talking about.  Take the advice he puts forth in this text seriously. You're in good hands!
